A Massive Investment: Google Announces 18 New Renewable Energy Deals

By converting natural resources into sustainable electricity, renewable energy technology is opening the door toward a cleaner and healthier environment. The global renewable energy market is expected to exceed $1.5 trillion by the year of 2025.

Some of the world’s largest corporations are taking part in the renewable energy movement for the sake of creating a more sustainable resources and helping the environment. Google has recently invested a record-breaking amount in renewable energy deals in the United States, Chile, and Europe. They have announced a total of 18 new deals, which is by far their largest investment in renewable energy deals.

Read on to learn the details of their recent investment, as well as the benefits of the shift to renewable energy on a global scale.

Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai Elaborates the Investments

The 18 new renewable energy deals are worth a total of 1,600 megawatts (MW), which brings Google’s set of wind and solar agreements to 5,500 megawatts in total. As of this announcement, Google is officially involved in 52 renewable energy projects that will have a positive impact on the environment. According to Google’s statements, the new projects will lead to massive investments in new energy infrastructures. We’re talking about investments worth over $2 million.

This is not the end of Google’s dedication to renewable energy movements. They are also planning to purchase around 720 megawatts in the US, more specifically from solar farms located in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. While they are yet to clarify their plans for Europe, we found that Google is going to buy additional 125 megawatts in Chile in order to power their data center at the same location.

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, addressed that the majority of Google’s investments in renewable energy were in the wind energy sector. That is why they focused on mostly solar investments on the territory of the United States. Another reason they opted for solar energy is the declining cost in solar. Pichai also confirmed that the investment in Chile is slightly different, since they invested in a hybrid solar and wind deal. This was Google’s first investment in a hybrid renewable energy deal as well. When asked about this project, Google’s CEO said:

“Because the wind often blows at different times than the sun shines, pairing them will allow us to match our Chilean data center with carbon-free electricity for a larger portion of each day.”

The Benefits of Renewable Energy

There are numerous reasons why turning to renewable energy is the best way to save the planet and provide plenty of sustainable electricity:

  • The renewable energy technology provides a clean form of energy generated from nothing but natural and sustainable sources.
  • The traditionally used fossil fuels are leaving devastating consequences for the environment due to the generation of greenhouse gases.
  • Toxic fumes caused by the burning of fossil fuels are being released in the air in massive amounts.

Since renewable energy sources eliminate the use of fossil fuels, using these technologies will help industries and corporations to reduce their carbon footprint. Mass use of renewable energy would allow us to live in a cleaner and healthier environment, have lower electricity prices, and have a safer supply of sustainable energy.
