Westinghouse Enhances Ukraine Nuclear Safety with BEACON Contract Award

Westinghouse Electric Company today announced that it has signed a contract with National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NNEGC) Energoatom to license the Westinghouse BEACON™ Core Monitoring System for use at the Zaporizhia nuclear plant Unit 5, further diversifying fuel and related materials supply to Ukraine reactors. BEACON is a state-of-the-art product providing crucial reactor measurements for required safety margins.

BEACON is successfully being used at South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3.Expanding the use to the Zaporizhia nuclear plant demonstrates Energoatom’s confidence in the software to calculate the detailed power distribution for the reactor core in real time using input from plant instrumentation.

At today’s contract signing with Energoatom President Yuriy O. Nedashkovsky, Westinghouse President and CEO Danny Roderick stated, “Westinghouse continues to help Ukraine increase domestic energy output while enhancing safety and security, providing for Ukrainians’ electricity needs and further diversifying fuel and components supply to the country. We are providing the country energy independence through diversification.”
