IEA and China National Bureau of Statistics Hold Training Workshop on Energy Statistics

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the China National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) kicked off a joint training workshop in Beijing on Wednesday, focusing on the importance of energy efficiency indicators and renewable energy statistics for policy worldwide.

More than 100 participants from China, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand are taking part in the workshop, joined by IEA statisticians and experts from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Austria, Japan,  and the United States.

In their opening remarks, the IEA Chief Statistician Duncan Millard and the NBS Deputy Commissioner Mao Youfeng both highlighted the benefits of international cooperation to produce timely energy statistics.

The workshop is part of the three-year work programme signed in February 2017 by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) and the IEA’s Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol. Under the programme, the IEA and China agree to step up cooperation on energy security, capacity building, data and statistics.

The three-day training workshop also reflects China’s shared support for the transition toward sustainable energy, and the IEA’s commitment to working closely with emerging economies to find solutions to energy and sustainability challenges.
